Sasha Palmquist is a learning sciences researcher and professional evaluator of informal learning experiences. Sasha earned a BA in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania where she first studied the learning impact of afterschool science programs on urban middle-school youth. She completed MS and PhD degrees in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and produced research that explored the impact of young children’s interest and knowledge on family learning conversations in museums. Over the last ten years, Sasha’s research and evaluation work has focused on understanding how prior knowledge, interest, engagement and personal identity shape learning opportunities and experiences in out-of-school and informal learning environments like natural history museums, science centers, children’s museums, zoos, and amusement parks. As a Senior Research Associate at the Institute for Learning Innovation she designed and executed evaluation studies that explored the development of scientific reasoning in complex domains including evolution and climate change. In addition, her work explored the challenges of developing and maintaining professional communities of practice and measured the impact of participation in exhibition design and evaluation on middle school students STEM knowledge, interest, and engagement. She is currently the Principal of Palmquist & Associates, LLC a research and evaluation consultancy in Washington, DC.
