Master's Degree Admission Requirements

Students who apply for master’s degree candidacy in the Museum Studies Program must meet all general requirements for admission to Columbian College of Arts and Sciences and must hold a bachelor's degree with a major, or its equivalent, in an academic subject relating to museum collections. Some common majors are anthropology, American studies, history and biology, but other majors are also accepted.


Domestic Applicants

  • Submit an online application
  • Pay the application fee online
  • Submit academic transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • Submit two (2) letters of recommendation, at least one letter should be from an academic source
  • Submit official GRE scores (ETS code for Columbian College of Arts and Sciences is 5246)
  • Submit a statement of purpose, 250-500 words

Fall semester: completed applications due by February 1st *
Spring semester: completed applications due by October 1st

* If you wish to be considered for a partial departmental fellowship, you must submit your completed application by January 5th

International Applicants

  • Submit an online application
  • Pay the application fee online
  • Submit academic transcripts from all colleges/universities attended (with official English translations, if in another language)
  • Submit two (2) letters of recommendation in English (at least one letter should be from an academic source)
  • Submit official GRE scores (ETS code for Columbian College of Arts and Sciences is 5246)
  • Submit official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
    Scores - Minimum of scores of 600 for the TOEFL paper-based, or 100 for TOEFL internet-based, or 7.0 IELTS are required

Applicants requiring an I-20 or IAP-66 Form for GW or F-1 or J-1 Visas, must submit all required documents by January 5th to apply for the fall semester.
